Forms and conventions of Horror/ Comedy Hybrid

Ident – In this case it was Universal pictures, Studio Canal, Working Titles and Big talk Productions.
Music signature – For the film this is ‘Ghost town’ by the Specials, written in the 1970’s to express the worry for the lazy youths. This is very eerie but amusing music which works well with the genera of the film.
Opening credits – Tell use about the companies involved e.g. Universal pictures, Studio Canal, Working Titles. It also tells us the title of the film. I noticed how the tiles were at the bottom of the screen. This was so they didn't dominate the screen but were incorporated with in it.
Character introductions – During the opening Titles we meet  many character that we are likely to meet again during the film e.g. the Trolleys boy, the women on the check out and the boy kicking a football seeing them as they used to be is quiet humorous as they are very zombie like to begin with. We are also introduced to the main character Shaun There is a close up shot that begins on his feet and shadow slowly moving up to his face creating Enigma coding.
Introduces us to Genera – this is mainly done by the introduction to the actors for example Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are know for their spoof comedy films.
Introduction to Location – This is achieved by opening with long shots that move and transition smoothly across the screen showing normal English Supper markets, Streets and Bus stops, letting us know that this is based in the modern day in England some where.

Ident – Once again had the Ident of Studio Canal.
Theme music – ‘Sitting here in limbo’ by Jimmy Cliff is a perfect song for the intro of Warm bodies it contrasts with the inner conflict of ‘R’ and the danger that is all around him putting the audience on edge, which is perfect because this is when people are most likely to laugh.

Narrator – ‘R’s inner monologue is interesting because it allows the audience to understand what’s happening and introduces us to the characters involved. Also showing the similarities between ourselves and Zombies stops the audience being afraid.

Introduction to Characters – we are introduced to: ‘R’, ‘Bonnies’ and his ‘best friend’

Introduction to Location - This is different to Shaun of the dead because it is actually based in a post apocalyptic America this is shown to us through long shots, ‘R’s narrative, and flash back to our present day. Like Shaun of the dead the film hints on at the idea that technology is zombie-fying us e.g. during the flashback ‘R’s words contrast with the reality of everyone on their Phones and Ipads e.g. ‘and just… enjoy each other's company’.

Intro to Potential narrative – We are told through ‘R’s narration that Zombies become ‘Bonnies’ and actually see the transformation of one of the Zombies this is a potential narrative for the film. Leaving the audience wondering how can they become like that? I that going to happen to ‘R’?

  1. This is a start Cara. Good to see you have been able to embed your preliminary video and create links to other videos you have been analysing. Whilst you have analysed some of the forms and conventions of the opening of two films I feel this is a little brief and needs some expansion, looking in more depth into the forms and conventions and possibly expanding upon the examples you have looked at. Screen shots explaining exactly what you are describing are sometimes better for showing your understanding.

  2. Well done Cara this is progressing very well now. The analysis and media institutions section is very strong. You need to now focus on the target audience research - both primary and secondary.

  3. Cara - you need an introduction to your stereotypes section, saying why you are writing about these stereotypes. At the moment they just appear with no explanation.
